It can be hard to find Rae Dunn here in Canada and until recently, it was few and far between that we’d see anything at all. We seem to be going through a bit of a drought again but we’re hoping it won’t last too long.
I’m in a couple of Canadian groups on Facebook and it’s been so wonderful to meet some of the local gals and help each other build our collections.
I’d love to find a few more small crates or build some that I can take up more space upward in the cabinet since the shelves are so far apart. I think I’ll be on the lookout for something that will work better. I adore how Liz Marie’s only has two doors instead of four, so it’s easier to see her full collection. I find the doors on mine block some of my collection plus it doesn’t help that two of the doors are glass and two are chicken wire. I think I might replace the other two doors with wire too once I get some sharper cutters. I wrote about the cabinet progress so far here.
I get asked all kinds of questions about my collection so I figured I would answer some of them here. I love that you guys are curious about my new collection! I love to spread the Rae Dunn love!
Where do you buy Rae Dunn in Canada?
The TJX stores carry Rae Dunn in Canada (you may be able to find some wholesalers that also carry the boutique line) TJX stores are:
There’s no set store as to where it’s easier to find or who stocks it most often. Some days you’ll get lucky and others there will be nothing anywhere. There’s also a lot of “upsellers” unfortunately, that call ahead to have items held and then go in and buy the whole lot to sell at ludicrous prices. It’s really discouraging and competitive and that’s really not what the love of this pottery should be about. I think if we all stop supporting the upsellers then they’ll stop overcharging. Don’t get me wrong, I can see charging a small finder’s fee to recuperate time and gas money but some people are selling $10 items for $350 or more! Luckily there are groups on Facebook that have a price cap as to how much extra you can charge. Rae keeps her prices low to make it affordable for everyone and has expressed her upset about upsellers.
Who is Rae Dunn anyway, and why are her designs such a big deal?
Rae Dunn is a California artist who’s worked with clay for over two decades.
Her inspiration comes from the earth and she finds beauty in simple shapes, natural forms, and found objects.
Her work is strongly influenced by the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi, the beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. “I don’t strive for perfection in line and form in my work, because for me the balance I’m trying to achieve can’t be represented that way. The incompleteness and imperfection of my work is part of the story. Just as the absence of something in our lives can stir powerful feelings and show us the way to wholeness.”
I think she’s such a big deal because her designs are so different and unique. I love the wonky shapes of the mugs and it’s fun because no two are the same. Rae says it herself, she loves things to be perfectly imperfect. Because her work load got so big she teamed up with Magenta to create a lot of her items. They WERE all handmade at one time but now they are produced at Magenta’s warehouse in China. (I’ve heard it’s still handmade but I’m not 100% sure about that one) They use her prototype design to speck. She clears up some of the confusion in this blog post.
She does still sell some of her hand-made creations on her Etsy shop. (Though she’s taking a break from it right now)
She’s also such a big deal because she’s so down to earth, humble and kind. She’s always sharing her fans photos on her Instagram & Facebook, she’s just all around awesome.
How long have you been collecting?
I’ve been a lover of Rae Dunn’s art for a long time but didn’t find my first piece until May of this year. (2017) So I’ve only been collecting for 3 months.
What was your very first Rae Dunn item?
I found two RELAX mugs and nearly fell over when I spotted them. I had been checking stores for a while at that point and had never found a single piece.
Do you use your Rae Dunn pieces?
Yes! absolutely! I’m a lot more careful with them now though, since I broke one. Luckily it was just a crack and I can still use it for display. Rae says she wants us to use and enjoy her work. I like looking in my cabinet to find a saying that matches how I’m feeling that day. I also love to use the matching mugs (Mr. Mrs. / His, Hers / Dad, Mom.) with my hubby. I still have my eye out for the Hubby & Wifey set. that was the first ones I saw and have wanted them since with no luck as of yet.
I haven’t however let the kitties use their dishes yet. I hope to soon but between them and the toddler, their dishes get clinked around quite a bit, and I don’t want them to break.
How do you care for your Rae Dunn pieces?
I’ve been working on a post about that and you can find it here.
